RIM-156 Standard Missile-2 ER Block IV
History
The RIM-156 Standard Missile-2 ER Block IV was a missile developed to be fired from ships that didn't have the Mk 10 GMLS and thus could not launch RIM-67 Standard Missile ER. This new missile, initially designated RIM-67E, used the [[RIM-66 Standard Missile MR|RIM-66 missile body on top of a completely new booster of the Mk 72 type. The guidance system was also modified from that of the earlier RIM-67 to be better suited for performance against high performance, low RCS Threats.
The SM-2 ER Block IV can be launched from the strike length Mk 41 VLS.
The first launch occured in December 1992 and it was considered operational in August 1999.
SM-2 ER Block IV is scheduled to be replaced by the RIM-174 Standard Missile 6 ERAM
