  • Development

After introducing the new type of light cruisers of the LK 1908 Amur class in fleet scouting and screening roles, plans for new improved variants were drafted in the outbreak of world war I. With the increased size and range of foreign torpedoboats (eg. destroyers), it was felt that the Amur design was insufficient to protect the fleet against the larger destroyers. The Shilka class evolved from these new requirements. It was considerably larger more powerful design. Shilka class fielded 12 guns of which 4 was fitted in superfiring centerline positions fore and aft. Machinery was completely domestic with the KhGTZ turbines substituting the Vulcan-AEG turbines from the Amur design. Total of 9 units were ordered but only 4 were completed before the revolution.
