  • Development

LK 1909 g Class was the first proper "post-tsusima" type battleships designed in Far Eastern Empire and were clear departure of the older designs. It was designed within the guidelines of the "Special committee of readjustment in naval affairs" and featured some of the features found on the earlier LK 1906 g Popedonosnyy class such as the all-covering armour and placement of the machinery. A novel feature was the overall layout of the design. 4 triple turrets were fitted evenly alongside the centerline in the so called "linear" arrangement. The class was build around the new 50-caliber 305mm maingun which 12 were carried as recommended by the committee. The ships were fitted with steam turbines which gave the ships impressive 23kt speed, higher than contemporary battleships abroad.

Unlike the earlier practice of building battleships in pairs, the new class were build in 4 ships, one complete brigade at once. This was to keep the cohesion of the ships in brigade similar as the brigade was intended to fight and operate together.
