HSA VI-01
History
The VI-01 was the only Dutch pure height-finder. It was an conventional nodding-beam radar in which feed and antenna moved together, unlike the Robinson-feed systems used in US radars. The VI-01 used the S-band transmitter also used in the DA-01 series. The radar was first used on the Dutch cruisers, and was after that fitted on the aircraft carrier Karel Doorman. As far as is known, no other ships were fitted with this radar. Land versions were however produced.
The radar rotated around the base, while scanning in vertical direction by an nodding movement. This required the radar to take a lot of space, so it was designed with additional attention paid to funnel gas and weather corrosion, so the radar could be placed high up in the ships. For this reason, these radars were mainly constructed from stainless steel.
