Development
Plans for larger destroyers were made prior the Far Eastern - Japanese war but the program was put on hold during the war. After the war the plans were revisited with imminent war experience taken into consideration. To achieve desirable speed for larger design, new steam-turbine propulsion was selected. The machinery was ordered from UK. Armament was also strengthened, especially in artillery where the new 102mm gun replaced the 76mm gun from the old destroyers. Two shipyards were tasked with the building but were given rather free hands in the design. Novaya Verf's variants had the forward superstructure one deck lower and seperated from the turtle-back bow. This made the Novaya Verf's build boats bit more stable but a lot wetter than the Dalzavod build units. Overall the design was considered to be intermediate and not particular successful. They were handicapped with short operational radius.
