AN/SPS-4
History
The AN/SPS-4 was a C-Band high resolution surface search and zenith air search radar for moderate size naval vessels. It used a dual antenna consisting of a paraboloid surface reflector, and a spherically zenith reflector, which permits the operator to observe targets either on and near the surface of the water or approaching from overhead.
AN/SPS-4 was first delivered in 1952. As aircraft speeds rose, the zenith search function was no longer relevant (due to it's short range) so it was disabled from 1958 onwards.
