40cm/45 Type 94
History
The Type 94 guns were the most powerful ever installed on an battleship. The guns were officially designated 40cm/45 Type 94 instead of their actual 46cm/45 dimensions. The actual size was kept a secret and was not known internationally until after WW2.
A total of 27 guns were produced, the first one being completed for testing in March 1938. All produced guns were intended to be fitted on Yamato class battleships, 3 guns per turret, 3 turrets per ship. The first 18 were fitted to Yamato and Musashi, The rest were never fully completed or at the very least never fitted on any ship as the Shinano was converted to an aircraft carrier instead. All remaining were destroyed at the end of the war or shipped to the US for tests. These appear to have been scrapped in the 1950's.
