155mm/62 Mark 51 AGS
History
The Advanced Gun System (AGS) was originally intended for the DD-21 program that evolved into the DDG-1000 (Zumwalt class) program. Initially the gun was conceived as a vertical gun mounting ([VGAS], Vertical Gun for Advanced Ships) but in 1999 the US Navy decided to use a more conventional turret configuration.
In October 2001 the first prototype was first tested. The mounting was considered (somewhat) operational by October 2016 when the USS Zumwalt was commissioned. However, the development of suitable ammunition for AGS was cancelled, so in 2021 it was announced the mountings on the 3 Zumwalt class destroyers with launch tubes for hypersonic weapons in the future.
In 2012 a light-weight version of AGS was proposed that could be fitted on conventional hulls such as the DDG-51 Flight III class. This would allow for more of these mountings to be build and operationally used, allowing for reduced cost per fired projectile as development costs could be reduced. This mounting was called AGS-L, short for 155mm Advanced Gun System-Lite. This was ultimately not procured.
