12''/50 Mark 8
History
The 12" Mk 8 gun was developed to be able to fire the new "super-heavy" AP projectiles. It was developed from the 12"/50 Mark 7 guns used on the Wyoming class. This new gun was designed in 1939 and only saw service on the Alaska class heavy cruisers from 1944 onwards.
The Mark 8 guns were fitted in triple turrets. 10 of these turrets were build, 3 for each Alaska class and 1 spare. All were decommissioned as the Alaska class was, leaving service in 1947.
