AN/SPS-43
History
The AN/SPS-43 was a VHF-band long range air search radar used by the US Navy. The radar gave 2D (range and bearing) information. Two antennae were used: the SPS-29 small ship antenna or the 12.8 m wide large ship antenna, the SPS-37. The SPS-43 used the SPS-37 antenna with improved back-end hardware that greatly enhanced clutter rejection and ECCM performance. The system was first introduced in 1961. It was provided with a Moving Target Indicator (MTI), but in practice this vacuum-tube powered design was unsatisfactory, requiring lots of operator intervention to function, if it was used at all. A AT-352/UPA-22 IFF antenna was mounted to most units.
