History

the AN/SPS-6 was the first of the postwar generation of L band search radars. It is typically carried at the masthead. The antenna was designed to have a broad beam in the vertical dimension for the detection of high altitude jets.

AN/SPS-6 was first procured by the USN in 1947. No new versions were developed after 1963 and all seem to have been out of service by 1985.

AN/SPS-6 was developed into the AN/SPS-12.
