The Makassar Class was a class of Light Cruisers designed in 1940 as an anti-air warfare ship.
History
The Makassar class AA Cruiser was a controversial design when first proposed. The legislature argued over several days regarding the ships, with some legislators preferring to build a new class of light cruiser armed with 6.1" guns over the 5" armed Makassars. News of the British attack at Taranto solidified support for the ship.
