History

SAMOS was an proposal by SAGEM for an active defensive system for small warships and an CIWS for larger warships. The active component was an modified EX-83 mounting. The mounting was equipped with an optical sight with rangefinders, infrared and television camera's on a gyro stabilised gimbal. The mounting interfaces with the ships air search radars to find targets and can be used in semi-auto (remote controlled) and automatic mode. On top of the barrels a set of 4 infrared homing Mistral missiles could be fitted The SAMOS was was tested in 1987 but was not accepted for service.
