The Skoric State(Skoric: Skoríska Staten), Officially the Skoric Peoples Socialist State(Skoric: Skoríska Folksociále Staten) is a federal socialist state situated in northern Ariethia, making it one of two federally socialist states in Ariethia. With an area of about 2.2 million square kilometers and a population of almost 140 million, it is the sixth-most populous country. It was organized as a federal union of autonomous socialist states, the largest of which is the Theamak FAS. The Skoric State shares land borders with Lilabor to the west, and Archalae, Wykonn, Palaen and Zoble to the south. It shares maritime borders with Lilabor and the Deysian Federation through the Trans-Anhlietian and Lars Gulf. Its capital is Suric, although its most populous city and financial center is Theamak. After the end of the civil war in 1911, the Skoric State would become the first ever constitutionally socialist country.

Skoríska was first inhabited in the Paleolithic age, with organized societies emerging in the first millennium on the Black River in modern-day Helnnogard. Up until the 11’th century, Skoríska consisted of various independent kingdoms and city-states up until the 17’th century, when they effectively formed a confederation to fight Lilaborn raids from the west. The confederation would eventually be succeeded by the Empire of Skoríska in the early 18’th century, before being overthrown by socialist revolutionaries in 1911. As a result of treaties made with Lilabor, most of its western territories were integrated into East Lilabor as a way to appease Lilaborn expansionism.

Skoríska went through a period of prolonged warfare in the 20’th century. After the end of its civil war, it underwent rapid industrialization in the 1920’s and 1930’s in what was considered an economic miracle. The restoration of economic stability and the undertaking of massive public works projects alongside a mass re-armament scheme briefly made it the center of all trade on the Ariethnian continent. In late 1939, the Holy Republic began mobilizing its military in a bid to overthrow socialist rule and establish various satellite states throughout the western regions of the Skoric State. Due to this, the Skoric State would launch a pre-emptive invasion in early 1940, launching the Pan-Ariethnian conflict. It would conquer most of Ariethia but failed to achieve most of its strategic objectives within Lilabor, leading to a stalemate in 1947 and an end to hostilities. Its rapid economic development and sphere of influence would cement its status as a superpower.

Tensions with the Lilaborn led Imperial-Bloc led to the First Cold War. The Imperial-Bloc would eventually be expanded into what is known as SOFA in 1955, prompting the Skoric State to create its own alliance, ATNAS in 1956. Although neither side engaged in direct military conflict, they instead fought on an ideological basis through various proxy wars throughout the globe. In the 1960’s, the Skoric State would compete to lead the First Space Race, launching the first space station into orbit, and the first probe onto another planet. It would also build the first permanent research station in 1979, the International Research Station. In 1981, the controversial backing of Mer-Freula in its brutal war against Merakistaq would lead to a long list of sanctions, alongside an internationally-backed blockade supported by SOFA referred to as ‘The Great Oceanic Wall’. These comprehensive economic sanctions would last up until the late 1990’s, when they were lifted thanks to warming relations between ATNAS and SOFA. The end of the blockade paved the way for an increasingly liberal economy, with the switch to a radically different economic model combining market-oriented characteristics of more capitalist societies, while maintaining the best elements of Skoric socialism. This change in economic model, while leading to an initially crippling recession due to the transition, led to unprecedented economic growth in the 21’st century. These economic, but also political reforms helped to reintegrate the Skoric State into the global economy and politics. Since the late 2010’s, the Skoric State has been militarily involved in a number of conflicts within what is considered the Third World, such as its war in Noshkovia in 2005, East Deysia since 2013, and more recently its ongoing invasion of Sigramearsk in 2023. It is generally agreed upon that that Skoric State began the Second Cold War with its large-scale invasion of Sigramearsk.

The Skoric State as of 2023 is classed as a developed country, with a high-income economy and a global leader in science and technology, electronics, and the automotive industry. It has low levels of corruption, environmental issues, and civil liberties, but ranks among the lowest in international measurements of freedom of the press and freedom of religion. It is also one of few countries in the world to implement universal healthcare, alongside tuition-free university education for the youth. The Skoric State also possesses the third-largest stockpiles of nuclear weapons, and the third-largest military expenditure, trailing behind the Deysian Federation and Holy Republic. Despite its weakened influence and economy after the blockade, it is still considered one of the three superpowers of the world. The Skoric State is a member of ATNAS and a founding member of CON, a permanent member of both Security Councils.

History

The history of the Skoric State began after the end of the Skoric Civil War, which ended with the economic collapse and political disintegration of the Imperial Skoric State. Established quickly in 1911 after the Skoric Civil War, the Skoric State would be a one-party state under the New Socialist Party. Its early years were marked by the implementation of radical socialist policies, which sought to stabilize the economy and bring order.

The first national election saw the rise of Loymann Ghauss, a pragmatic and initially unpopular leader who helped implement policies that would aid in the reconstruction of the country. His ‘New Industry Plan’ or NIP, helped to rebuild the ruined agriculture industry and rapidly industrialized the nation through heavy investment. The Skoric State had a central role in the Pan-Ariethnian Conflict, although to the cost of many millions of civilian and military lives.

The Skoric State emerged as one of the three superpowers, leading the Socialist Bloc against the Imperial Bloc during the First Cold War. This period saw the Skoric State engage in an arms race, a space race, and numerous proxy wars around the globe. After the death of Loyman Ghauss in 1955, increasing efforts would be made to decentralize the economy to avoid stagnation, although efforts would cease after the SOFA blockade in 82’. The 80s and 90s saw a brief stagnation and economic decline, although it was due to weakening trade with Deysia and the 1981 and 1992 Oil Glut. The extractionary relationships of ATNAS also caused a strain in ties between the Socialist world and the Skoric State as it sought to maintain its status as the pillar of socialism. The vast burdens of managing ATNAS, military expenditures and sanctions would put a great strain upon the Skoric economy.

In the 2000’s, Tervok Kalden’s policies of economic restructuring and rapprochement with the Imperial Bloc led to a warming in relations and the eventual lifting of the blockade. With a massively reduced military budget and a radically new socialist model, the 21st century saw a resurgence of the Skoric state in global affairs. Its invasion of Sigramearsk in 2023 would begin the Second Cold War, and the subsequent Second Space Race.

Military

The Armasig Military Munitions Complex is the largest and most advanced munitions plant in Ariethia, producing approximately 50,000 artillery shells per month.

The Skoric State Armed Forces(Skoric: Váldharina Skóriska Folksociále Staten) is considered one of the world’s most powerful militaries, engaged in a continuous modernization of its armed forces even despite restrictions of the 2010 Global Peace Accords. Since 2020, it consists of five services: the State Ground Forces(Statmark Váldstärk), State Air Forces(Statlúft Váldstärk), State Naval Forces(Statamarina Váldstärk), State Air-Defense Forces(Statlúftforsvar Váldstärk) and State Strategic Missile Forces(Statsastrategisk Rakettstärk). It also has two independent arms of service, the Domestic Security Forces, often referred to as the Fláktrupps, and Airborne Forces(Lúftburne Váldstärk). As of 2023, the military has around a million active-duty personnel, the sixth-largest, and about 30 million in reserves. As of 2005, it is mandatory for all male and female citizens aged 18-27 to be drafted for a year of service in the Armed Forces. The Skoric State is among four recognized nuclear weapons states, with the third largest stockpile of nuclear weapons; a little less than a third of all nuclear weapons are owned by Skoriska. It is a party to the Global Nuclear-Arms-Ban Treaty (GNABT) and the Nuclear-Test-Ban Accord (NTBA). In Absolute terms, Skoric military spending in 2024 was the third-highest in the world, spending approximately 152 billion skigmarks, or 1.9% of its GDP. In 2020 it was the world’s second-largest arms exporter, with an entirely indigenous defence industry, producing most of its military equipment.

Skoriska has major military industries and the second-largest aerospace sector in the world. The country has produced equipment such as the Aergast attack helicopter, the Orck tank, Staghorss supercarrier and many others. Skoriska is a major arms seller, with a large portion of its arsenal designs available for the export market. Skoric weapons exports totaled 55 billion skigmarks in 2022, up from 42 billion in the previous year. Additionally, Mer-Freula alone contributed more than 15 billion skigmarks to the Skoric total. Among the largest Skoric defence companies are Armasig, REUA, Skegharr-Hurk and Dayac.

Geography

Skoriska is the second-largest country in Ariethia. It borders Lilabor to the west, and Archalae, Wykonn, Palaen and Zoble to the south. Skoriska is also bordered by the East Ariethnian Sea and, at the north by the Skrandtik Sea. Skoric territory covers 2,214,078 km2 (854,860 sq mi). Elevation ranges from the mountains of the White Alps (highest point: Point Fror at 4,963 metres or 16282 feet) in the south to the shores sea of the Marino in the east and north-east. The forested uplands of central Skoriska and and lowlands of southern Skoriska (lowest points: In the Federal Autonomous State of Oskanact, Ryborsg at 3.3 meters below sea level) are traversed by such major rivers as the Svarflor, Storafor, Lagvatn and Vindigstrom. Signficiant natural resources include Oil, natural gas, iron ore, timber, copper, nickel, salt, uranium and nickel.

Climate

Most of Skoriska has a climate ranging from subarctic in the north to subtropical in the south. Northern Skoriska tends to have warm summers and very cold winters with heavy snow in the areas bordering the Sea of Marino, alongside in mountainous areas. The northern states tend to have prevailing easterly winds that bring in moist air from East Ariethnian Sea, moderating the temperature and increasing precipitation. Conversly the southern states tend to have more extreme temperatures.

from Febrárik 2019 - 2020, average monthly temperatures in Skoriska ranged from a low of -22°C in Janúrik to a high of 21.2°C in Júnik 2019. Average monthly precipitation ranged from 20 mm in Febrárik and Aprélik 2019 to 790 mm in Febrárik 2020. Average monthly hours of sunshine ranged from 45 in Novémbik 209 to 500 in Júnik 2019.

Economy

Theamak, a leading business center in Ariethia.

Skoriska initially adopted a command economy, whereby the production and distribution of goods were centralized and directed by the government. In the late 1980’s, there were plans to take the next step onto a computer-managed socialist planned economy, using a decision support system called EKOST. Due to the lifting of the blockade, further work on EKOST would stop, with the program completely canceled.

As of currently, Skoriska has a socialist-orientated market economy with a highly skilled labour force, a low level of corruption and a rather high level of innovation. It is the world’s third-largest exporter and fifth-largest importer, and has the second-largest economy in Ariethia, the ninth-largest by nominal GDP, and the fourth-largest by PPP. Its GDP per capita measured in purchasing power standards amounts to 156% of the Compakt average. The country’s service sector contributes approximately 41% to total GDP, industry 49%, with Skoriska having the largest manufacturing sector in Ariethia, and agriculture 10% as of 2023. The unemployment rate published by ArStat amounts to 1.9%, the second lowest in Ariethia.

Skoriska is apart of the Economic Compact, alternatively E-pakt, representing more than 350 million consumers. In 2015, the country accounted for 56% of the E-zone economy according to the World Monetary Fund. Skoriska introduced the common Epakt currency, the skigmark, in 2006. Monetary policy is headed by the State Central Bank, headquartered in Suric.

The Skoric manufacturing industry is regarded as one of the largest manufacturing economies and exporter of goods. Exports as percentage of GDP has stayed at just around 30%, reflecting their continued importance to the Skoric economy. Skoriska remains to be one of the largest trading nations in the world, playing a prominent role in international trade. Skoriska is the third largest exporter of heavy industrial goods. Skoriska is home to the DAYAC State Corporation, the world’s second-largest automotive manufacturer by vehicle production.

The top ten exports of Skoriska are oil and gas, vehicles, machinery, chemical goods, electronic products, electrical equipment, pharmaceuticals, transport equipment, basic metals, and food products.

Of the world’s 500 largest stock-market-listed companies measured by revenue in 2023, the Econ Global 500, 99 are headquartered in Skoriska. 30 major Skoric-based companies are included in the SKX, the Skoric stock market index which is operated by the Theamak Stock Exchange. Well-known international brands include DAYAC, Satall, AVMZ, REUA, Skegharr-Hurk and Skopek, to name a few.

Infrastructure and Energy

A RAK 9 train on the Theamak-Skogvarg high-speed rail line, with operating speed up to 300 km/h

With its central position within Ariethia, Skoríska is a transport hub for the continent. Its network of roads and high-speed rail is among the densest in Ariethia. The Skoric State National Railway Network or SNR train network serves all major Skoric cities, alongside destinations in neighbouring countries with speeds of up to 300 km/h. The largest airports are Skogvarg Airport, Theamak Airport, Kronfror Airport and Marya-Thesse Airport. The Port of Marya-Thesse is the second-busiest port in Ariethia and one of the twelve largest container ports in the world.

Theamak Nuclear Power Plant. Skoríska derives most of its energy from nuclear, 75%, a higher proportion than any other country in the world.

In 2020, Skoríska was the world’s fifth-largest consumer of energy. Skopek, which is majority-owned by the Skoric government, is the country's main distributor and producer of electricity, and the second-largest electric utility company, ranking second in revenue globally. Skoriska meets its power demands mostly through nuclear, which provides 75% of the country's electricity, the remainder of which is provided through a mix of oil and gas, alongside hydro, solar, and wind. Skoríska is considered a world leader in nuclear technology, with reactors and nuclear fuel being major exports. Thanks to its commitment to reducing energy consumption, in line with the Tierzig Accord, it has reduced primary energy consumption by 12% between 1991 and 2020, with a goal of reducing it further by 30% by 2030 and 50% by 2050.

Due to the reliance on nuclear power, the development of other renewable energy sources has been rather slow compared to other nations. Despite this, production capacity from renewable energies has increased, with hydropower being the leading source, accounting for 60% of the country’s renewable energy sources and contributing 10% of its electricity. Despite meeting almost all of its domestic energy demand through nuclear, Skoriska still maintains its position as the third largest producer of crude oil, something which is credited with helping sustain the massive Skoric welfare state.

Demographics

Education

The responsibility for educational supervision in Skoriska is primarily organized within each FAS. Optional kindergarten is provided for all children between three and six years old, after which school attendance is compulsory for nine years regardless of state. Primary education usually lasts for four to six years. Secondary schooling is divided into various tracks based on whether students choose to pursue an academic or vocational education. A system of mandatory apprenticeship called SU or Co-op ensures that all students gain necessary work experience by the time they graduate from a post-secondary institution. This model is well regarded and reproduced widely around the world.

As all Skoric universities and colleges are public institutions, students pay no tuition fees. The general requirement for attending a university is getting an SRE qualification by completing the quadri-annual State Level Exams. According to the WEB report in 2019, Skoriska is the world’s second leading destination for international study. The established universities in Skoriska include some of the oldest in the world, with Theamak University (established in 1453), Skogvarg University (established 1712) and Helnnogard University (established 1412) being the oldest. Theamak University’s academic model became widespread throughout Ariethnian universities due to its success.
