Usage

1341 gathering of prince-electors from the constituent states of the Holy Roman Empire. The use of heraldry as a means to identify geographical entities is a centuries-old tradition, preceding flags.

This template facilitates the use of heraldry as a means to simply and orderly illustrate armigers (e.g. countries, regions, cities, persons or organisations) in lists.

To see the Coat of arms list and for updates, click the toolbar Edit tab.

Example I

*{{Coat of arms|Germany}}
*{{Coat of arms|Kingdom of France}}
*{{Coat of arms|United States|text=none}}
*{{Coat of arms|Paris|text=''[[Fluctuat nec mergitur]]''}}
*{{Coat of arms|United Kingdom|size=45px}}

Parameters

size no The size of the arms. Include the denomination "px". 20px N/A
link no Where one is directed by clicking on the arms The initial value written {{Coat of arms|X}} N/A
text no The piece of text appearing on the right-hand side of the arms. The initial value written {{Coat of arms|X}} "none" gives no text whatsoever

Principles for consistency and visibility

Based on conventional heraldic practice, the following premise ensures a meaningful degree of uniformity and distinctiveness of the motifs even at low resolutions (20 pixels is the default width):

I: Escutcheons exclusively

All elements of achievement save the indispensable escutcheon are omitted.

E.g. for Belgium, Insigne Belgicum.svg is shown instead of more elaborate variants such as Great coat of arms of Belgium.svg, State Coat of Arms of Belgium.svg or .

Similarly, for Austria: Insigne Austricum.svg is shown instead of Coat of arms of Austria.svg.

II: Marshalling avoided if possible

When an escutcheon has multiple variants, the one with least marshalling, i.e. the simplest, is employed.

E.g. for Sweden, Insigne Suecicum.svg is shown instead of the following quartered variant: Blason Oscar II de Suède.svg.

Similarly, for Liechtenstein: Lesser arms of Liechtenstein.svg is shown instead of Greater arms of Liechtenstein.svg.
