History
The SMART-S (Originally named just SMART but was renamed SMART-S to distinguish it from the larger HSA SMART-L) is an 3D radar developed by Holland Signaal Apparaten in particular to deal with antiship missiles with small radar cross sections and speeds up to Mach 3. S-band was chosen as the best balance between range, clutter rejection and overall dimensions. The radar was developed to be fitted frigate sized vessels. The high data range and narrow beams make it possible to have the SMART-S designate targets directly for the ships directors. The antenna is stabilised against roll and pitch .
SMART-S was first used to replace DA-08 on the Heemskerck class frigates and was fitted to the Karel Doorman class frigates as build. For these installations, the order was placed in December 1986. The radar reached operational status in the early 1990's.
SMART-S was an unsuccessful contender for the British Type 996 requirement. It was however chosen for the German Type 123 frigate program. A land based version named Vanguard was also developed.
an X-band version was also designed but not adopted. An related system using G (formerly C) band was build, HSA MW-08.
The SMART-S was developed further into the SMART-S Mk 2
