History

the AN/SPS-3 was a short range X-band 3-D air search radar for use on destroyers and larger vessels. It was a hemispherical search radar using two rapid scanning pencil type antenna beams. One pre-production prototype (XN-1) was installed on USS Northampton in 1954. Soon after the SPS-3 program was cancelled.
