History
The AN/SPS-28 was the lightweight radar in the series consisting of the AN/SPS-17, AN/SPS-29, AN/SPS-37 and AN/SPS-43. These radars were meant to be long range 2D air search sets. They used the P-band frequency range. AN/SPS-28 had only about half the range and a third of the power of AN/SPS-17. The radar was meant for smaller ships and was delovered from 1957 onwards. The lower power of the AN/SPS-28 meant that it had inferior detection ability. Because of that, AN/SPS-29 was developed to have the same performance as the AN/SPS-17 and the same weight as the AN/SPS-28.
