Mk 7 Talos GMLS.png

History

The Mk 7 GMLS was fitted on the Galveston class cruisers, which were rebuilds of Cleveland class cruisers. The first installation was commissioned in 1958. The last ship with an Mk 7 GMLS was decommissioned in 1979.

The GMLS was used only with the RIM-8 Talos missile.

The Mk 7 is a missile launch system with the entire magazine above the main deck level. This allowed the ships hull to be left intact in the conversion. The magazine has place for 46 Talos missiles. The footprint is very similar to that of the Mk 9 Terrier GMLS, to allow conversion or redevelopment of the Cleveland class missile conversions if one missile was to be considered an failure or inferior to the other. The launcher used with the Mk 7 GMLS is the Mk 7 Dual-arm Talos launcher.

Part description

The drawing has the belowdeck installation drawn in, which requires covering for use on a finished Shipbucket drawing. Also included is the covering as on the magazine onboard the Galveston class. As this was the only installation, there is no indication which parts of this are parts of the Mk 7 installation and which are part of the ship itself.

Part of the Mk 7 installation was also an magazine for the Talos warheads. This magazine was installed below the waterline, underneath the ready service area.
