The SPY-1 was first installed on the test ship USS Norton Sound in 1973 and entered active service in 1983 on CG-47 Ticonderoga. While the first ships with the SPY-1 radar have already been decommissioned, new ships with the latest variants of these radars are still being ordered.
So far, there have been several versions of the SPY-1 radar.
- SPY-1, the prototype installation installed on Norton Sound
- SPY-1A, the first operational type, installed on the first 11 Ticonderoga class cruisers
- SPY-1B, installed on the last 15 Ticonderoga class cruisers
- SPY-1D, installed on the DDG-51 class and all later installations with the full size antenna.
- SPY-1F, frigate radar installation, has a 2,4 meter diameter as opposed to the 4 meter of the original antenna. Used on the Nansen class.
- SPY-1K, or corvette variant. The size of the antenna is reduced to just 1,5 meter. None are in service so far.

Part description
There are 4 parts on this page:
- the original component as that can be found on almost every shipbucket drawing with these radars. The part has sideviews, quarter views, top views and front view drawn.
- An updated component drawing showing more detail and the differences between the different SPY-1 variants. Of each variant, sideview, quarter view, front view are included. Of the SPY-1A, the belowdecks and top view are included. Of SPY-1D, the top view is also included.
- The SPY-1F radar variant. Sideview, quarter view, front view and top view are included.
- The SPY-1K radar variant. Sideview, quarter view, front view and top view are included.
