History

the AN/SPS-39 was the production version of the AN/SPS-26. The first prototype was presented in 1960, using the antenna of SPS-26. The new radar was more reliable and almost doubled SPS-26's range. An planar array version of it was introduced in 1963, and many of the earlier SPS-39's were updated to Series-III standard using this antenna, a new transmitter and receiver modifications. This again almost doubled the range and reduced noise. There was a version of SPS-39 with improved combat system integration which was designated SPS-42.

SPS-39B was an 60% wider version for more range, but was not particularly successful.

When a new version was designed with digital stabilisation, it was designated AN/SPS-52
