Shipbucket

To celebrate the recent awarding of the USN's FFG(X) contest, I thought I would dig out the two frigate concepts I drew for my AU post-1990 Cold War scenario from around 2006.

I have touched up both drawings with the latest parts (its amazing how many bits haven't much in that time!) to give a flavour of what I was thinking the USN should have built in the early 200s.


Bagley Class

I designed this as a Perry replacement, not sure what I kitbashed this from originally, whatever it was MConrads drew it originally and I leave his name on the credits in homage to whatever base ship inspired me at the time. Not sure this is a totally workable design and there are flaws but I wanted to retain the original feel of my youthful exuberance of the time (some of my other designs from that AU have aged less well!). Has a 61-cell Mk.41 forward but otherwise I have not tinkered too much with the armament.


Littoral Strike Frigate

This was a FREMM for the USN effectively. Of course now the USN will get a FREMM but it looks nothing like this sleek beauty. I had originally had 16 Harpoons and SLAMs on this to whack Soviet FACs but I've swapped them for NSMs. Has a 61-cell Mk.41 forward. I originally had a 76mm Super Rapid but now swapped it for a 57mm Bofors. I had planned this as the basis of a family of designs but never got around to the others (air defence, ASW etc.).

Except you didn't use all the new parts, I have new SPG-62's on the wiki and I am working on a new SPY-1 series if you want it

It feels like 2006 was yesterday! Yes, these drawings and designs are flawed and broken in various ways, but I enjoy discussions of where Shipbucket used to be.

It cracks me up that these use the (in my mind) "new" SLQ-32

Both are interesting designs and well drawn. I am amazed that someone thinks the US would properly arm a warship after the LCS fiasco, and the US FREMM will mount the 57mm and apparently only point dense systems.

I know! I look back at old drawings and go "did I really draw that six years ago!" We used to have a lot of kitbash fun in those days.
I still love the Littoral Frigate design, if I was to redo her properly I would add a nice integrated phased array mast of high tech goodies. The Bagley is cramped and her electronics are a bit muddled I guess.
She has: 1x 61 VLS for N-LOS, Tomahawk, SM-2, ESSM, 4x4 Kongsberg NSM, 1x RAM.
I left SM-2 on but I would be tempted to just standardise on ESSM packs, N-LOS is probably too small and weak for the littoral role I had in mind but it seemed to be in vogue in 2006 before LCS came along.

I do wonder how they would look like, if they was drawn from scratch, with today's shipbucket drawing style
