In 1926 the swedish government issued an investigation regarding new ships for the navy. The interest in aircraft was high but their preformance was poor so they had to be brought woth the fleet, not capable of operating from shore bases. So they planned an aircraftcarrying cruiser "hangarkryssare" because a true flat top was considered to expensive.

This is a very interesting design, mixing seaplane carrier and aircraft carrier features, almost a mini Hermes without a full length deck.

The "Hangarkryssare" was considered to expensive and a more ordinary cruiser was selected. This is the original plan for the Gotland, before she was cut down due to economics once again.

Its a shame in some ways that Gotland was not built to her original design.

Yes, indeed.
The Gotland was to much cut down to be an effective warship. I would have removed the aft gun turret and saved the two in front for a larger aircraft accomodations. It would have been intresting to see the original hangarkryssare survive into the helicopter age aswell.
