...But not of the schematic type. I'm actually wondering where on the web is the best place to find information on general sea conditions for specific areas? Perticularly the Makassar Strait, but the also the surounding waters too.

Probably, just Google whatever specific sea route + "sea conditions"

Just found a result concerning offshore drilling and described the strait as having benign conditions, and from reading it it would seem Beufort Force 4/5 is the typical max expected for the area, although there are probably certain atmospheric events which might change that from time to time.
