I'm actually going to use this thread for multiple designs of CDSs, mostly becouse I don't want to spam the Beginner Forum with too many threads, and I don't want to post a non-inspected design directly in my AU thread.
So, I kick this thread of with an 8 500 tonnes CDS with two 305mm and six 170mm artillery, as well a a speed of 18,5 knots.
Authorized as part of the 1903 naval plan, the HErMS Manligieten was the largest military ship ever built for Erikrike, at a maximum deplacement of 8 440 tonnes.
The increase in caliber of the armament, compared to the preceding classes, typicaly armed with 9,45"/240mm main artillery and 152mm, was motivated with the fact that naval battles would often be fought at larger range than before. Originaly planned for ten 152mm in four twin turrets and two single turrets in the secondary, the caliber was increased to 170mm, using a newly designed gun that had already been mounted on the brand new Valkyria class armoured cruiser* to follow suite. Entering service in 1908, the Manligieten and her sistership Stoltieten(1909) would serve in the neutrality watch during both world wars. In the late 30's they would recieve extensive refits and rebuilds, the Stoltieten having two of her secondary turrets replaced with two twin 105mm HAA guns, along with a multitude of lighter AA. They were decomissioned in 1948 and scrapped during the 50's.

Here are the modernized versions. Hope you'll like 'em!

The HErMS Stoltieten went through one of the most extensive modernations in Erikrike navy history in 1938-1939. She had two of her secondary turrets replaced by a pair of 105mm/50 M/34, and another pair mounted in a superfiring position over the aft 305mm turret. Her three funnels were trunked into two larger, and she was now partly oil-fired, instead of the earlier coal-only engines. The saved weight and new engines raised her speed by two knots, to 20,5 NM/h*, a great achievement considering how ond the ship was. The modernation being completed during the winter 1939, she took up the role as flagship for the ErRN, replacing her sister, which was now modernized in turn.
*This would however cause great strain on the hull and engines during extended periods of time.


HErMS Manligieten would not recieve the same somewhat extreme modernation her sistership went through. Another great war having started, it was felt it would be better to have both the "giants" in service as quickly as possible, rather than one going through a modernisation when any potential enemies could attack. She kept all her secondary turrets, but recieved a new AA bridge with two twin 75mm/60 M/28 mounts and an equall number of 20mm LAA guns. Her engines were modernized, but not to the degree of her sister, gaining a max speed of 19,3 knots. She was ready for service again in spring 1940.



Also note that the original version has been slightly updated.

It looks nice. Could just as easily be an armored cruiser.

Thanks! With a speed of 18,5 knots they are a bit slow for that purpose, but I guess they could be called that after 1939/40.

Stoltieten? Your own made-up word? Or did you mean to spell "Stoltheten" (Swedish) but got it somewhat wrong? Otherwise a close resemblance to HMS Oscar II of 1907.

I AM a Swede. The word is of cource based of "Stoltheten"(somewhat of a pun, consider she is the "Pride" of the ErRN), but I've altered it a bit(obvously).
So, nothing wrong with "Manligieten"(Manligheten)?
The Oscar II was indeed my greatest source of inspiration when designing these ships.

I have to admit I never caught that one! But, yes, had I noticed, I'd gripe about that as well. I'm a swede too, btw FYI, so if ever you need to pm me, you can use that language, though here, of course, we stick to English.
But thanks for the explanation though. I did hope you'd be a Scandinavian at the very least!
I have plans to draw the Äran-class armored ships in the near future. Have some decent reference materiel.

I was already pretty sure you were a Swede. And yes, of cource we keep to English in the threads!
So, nothing on the design that requires improving? Ship- as well as drawing wise?
Btw, you wouldn't mind sharing that material(if it's on the computor)? So that I have some good sources for future CDSs?

Well, since it's something of my forte, I'd suggest more detailed steam pinnaces. You can find suitable ones in my Victorian/Edwardian boat sheet, in the parts section. If those are not good enough for you, you may improve on your existing one.
As for my source material, it's largely unscanned line drawings; there are quite a few pictures online though.
