Could you use an SPQ-9 Gunfire Director in place of SPY-3 with the BAE 155mm AGS?

unknown. all ships with AGS equipped that have been completely designed into details, is the zumwalt. so SPY-3 is certain.
SPG-60 or SPQ-9A are possible, because those were on the USS thorn AGS proposal.... but we do not know what additional equipment would be added for that system
SPG-62 seems possible too, as the AGS lite concept was shown on a burke. this might have been the flight 3 burke, which has an new sensor suite planned, I don't recall which systems were in that right now.

I was just curious because I was looking at the AGS Backfit drawings and wondering why there wern't any new directors despite the installation of the AGS.

well, AGS is at least partially GPS guided, so it possible it needs no guidance from the ship at all.... but I do not know enough about the system to say for certain.

SPG-62 has nothing to do with gun direction. All gunfire control is handled through SPY-1 and SPS-67.
