Pity. She'd have made a nice carrier for the PLAN. (Then again, one Chinese CV got the military in a tussy, what'd two have done?)

Why is it a pity? Do we really want another authoritarian and repressive regime to increase its armaments? Sometimes I fail to get the comments here, I'm afraid. It's a good thing that the Kiev is being "civilized"; one less threat to countries that embrace liberty, freedom of conscience, democracy and pluralism, all things that China denies its own population!

Well said amigo :) I recently had my brother over from Western Australia, rabbiting on about how well Australia was doing on the back of China, and badmouthing Japan (who'd once been the 'flavour of the month'. My reply was 'be careful, for when you fall off the back of the Tiger..... The diference between the two nations is that one is a democracy, and the other is a totalitarian state, that has not the faintest glimmering of individual human rights; and yes, we have a lot to be afraid of there.

A luxury hotel?

Yeah... and they were gonna turn the other Russian flattop into a bloody casino, if everyone will remember.
I'll believe the ship is destined for duty as a hotel when I see it painted Holiday Inn green.
Till then, the lying ChiComs are assumed to be turning it into a training carrier or ASW platform... and someone needs to put it in the mud before they accomplish that.

"They proposed to tow Varyag out of the Black Sea, through the Suez Canal and around southern Asia to Macau, where they would moor the ship and convert it into a floating hotel and gambling parlor."

And now there is a carrier about to go to sea flying the PLAN ensign.
And soon, there will be two.

China wants to get into the power projection business- and if the free world doesn't stop her now while the price is cheap, it will be very high later.

It is usually the case with dictatorians countries, "Oh we just like to do that for promoting peace", and the next thing is you hear jack-boots marching in your street under another flag from your own. Anybody remembers the Sudetenland in the Czech republic in 1938?
