Hi all,

Here is the Bay Class inshore minehunter operated by the Royal Australian Navy for a short time before they were replaced by the Huon Class:

I also discovered that one of the ships that was cancelled was to be named after my hometown (or, more specifically, the bay that the town is named after) which would have made it the first RAN ship to be named that - but unfortunately it wasn't to be :(

Very nice, but I am biased ;) This was a catamaran hull, for those who aren't aware of that. And Rowdy, what was you home town? And, I've always wanted to know why this class was a failure?

As far as I am aware they suffered stability issues (the catamaran design meant that pretty much everything that would normally go within the hull had to go in the superstructure) along with poor seakeeping with their small size limiting their ability at sea.

Oh, Esperance is my home town, down on the south coast of WA :)

The Bay Class MHI was designed more for Inshore operations like harbours and in limited coastal areas particularly inside the Great barrier reef where it was more sheltered. But our navy had them operating mostly in open coastal sea operations like bass strait and the Gulf of Carpenteria which its hull design was very unsuited for in the role they were 1st conceived to do in the first place.
