Hi all,

How's this?

[ img ]

If the mast / platform is acceptable, I think I'll just add the aerials and consider it done, but I think I'll take a look at maomatic's 128mm DP suggestion, too - I suspect that'll be a somewhat more plausible ship, and I'm interested to see how it would look.

Oh, and for reference, wasn't ignoring you, maomatic, when you suggested moving the turrets into the empty space fore and aft, however, these ships are based in the south atlantic, with trips into the north Atlantic and Pacific by way of Cape Horn (not permitted transit of Panama Canal) as part of the spec - so the AU designers have "traditionally" had to go for quite good sea boats for them to be useful. Does the turret spacing make the ship impratical? If so, I'll amend, but that's the reason for the long, empty forecastle...

Regards,
Ad

Ay, ay, ay...that's waaaay too heavy a structure. Can you remodel you radar so it doesn't need to have an upper support arm? Right now it looks rather corny, and improv to me!

I think it looks fine.

Something tells me that the bulk of it will have detrimental effects during certain sea states... but if it can be shown it's not, then, it's ok...

Aaargh! This flippin' mast is going to be the death of me...

Just to clarify, whole structure looks corny and improv, upper support arm looks corny and improv? (edit: upper arm is supposed be be curved to prevent any concentration of stress - that was the idea, anyway...) If only upper arm, will raise the Freya \ height-finder, move the training stuff to underneath and move the right-hand edge of the lattice structure in by two - that'll create a smaller, lighter structure with a smaller footprint at the level the radar's on...

If whole structure, will copy the little rock structure more faithfully, but I was trying to get this to look like more of a "first attempt" at it...

While I'm not running a structural analysis on the platform and the arm it fits the "Looks like it will work" criteria, and the curved arm is a rather elegant solution to the stability problem without increasing the mass of the antenna array.

Hi apdsmith,

when I wrote my last reply, I seem to have overlooked that your gatlings are supposed to be 150mm DP guns!

Assuming, that they`d be workable, I think the calibre is a little small for a vessel that is the size of a full blown battleship.
One could argue that it still has the 20cm "secondaries", but there are only 4 guns per broadside, which would be pretty weak in a battle against anything the size of a heavy cruiser upwards.

While I am at it: I still don`t think you will be able to mount the 20cm`s where you`ve put them. As it is now, the ships` beam must be huge.
Same goes with the Quad-Torpedo tubes, as they`d also take up some space.

I would loose both completely and opt for smaller secondary guns (128mm or better 105mm) and some
triple torpedo launchers instead.

One more point: The front and aft section is a little cluttered with anchor winches etc. - less is more sometimes... ;-)

Again, I must say, you have done a good job and you have made some nice improvements since your first drawing!

P.S.:
I`ve got some "leftover" parts from the "Bismarck" and "Scharnhorst" (i.e. cranes and such) - they might fit your ship. If you`re interested just send me a PM.

Regards,
-maomatic-

I'm a bit curious... what are all the orange-ish circles and angle measurements for?

Hi maomatic, KHT,

This ship was originally intended to be a bit of fun (and has since turned into something of a millstone) - the 150mm gatlings are in no sense feasible, but it's still fun to muck about with them - Agreed on the beam, that's why I'm interested to see how the ship turns out with 128mm wing mounts instead - I hope that it'll not only become a bit shorter but actually regain cruiser lines (to an extent) as opposed to it's current barge \ brick hullform. As it is, agreed on weakness vs "proper" surface combatants, but it's supposed to be a) an AA platform and b) a prototype - that said, though, the scratch numbers for the gatlings would indicate 72 rounds / minute / mount, which presumably would be fair off-putting to most opponents, particularly if you get on the broadside.

Take the point about the torpedoes - I'd figured I might as well double down on the enormous beam, but it's not a problem to switch to triples instead. The KM didn't mount triples on combatants this size, iirc, either.

I was worried about clutter, that's why I've not drawn the anchor chains. Most of the stuff there is fairly necessary, though I wonder if it's strictly necessary to have the ventilators there, for instance. Might move them and see how it looks. And yes, I'd be interested in the crane - though have you put these parts on the parts sheet? It'd be nice if everybody could benefit!

KHT,

Yeah, sorry about that, I left the "Geometry" tab on paint.net active when I did that one - the big set of concentric circles in the middle is the funnel cap + shading lines, most of the other, smaller stuff, is deriving the shading points for various structures, with the weird half-cloverleaf thing a shading \ construction diagram for an old revision of a mast platform.
