It's because I have many modification on this hull, this one is with TERNE III on the foredeck and enclosed aft-deck, while the original had open aft-deck, and Harpoons on the foredeck. I just have to fix them a bit before Acelanceloet can put it up.

This is my submission, a real never-were, the Type 25 developed under the 'Future Light Frigate' study. Elements of Type 25 went into Type 23. This is based on the sole sketch I've seen by DK Brown. Note its an attachment for now as I see some additions are likely but I wanted to get overall opinions first.

Displacement: Around 3,500 tons
Dimensions: 412 feet long, beam 48ft 6ins, draught 19 ft (over sonar dome)
Armament: Three sextuple BAe Sea Wolf launchers (45 missiles), two qaudruple Harpoon launchers (8 missiles), two triple 12.75in A/S torpedo tubes (18 Stingray) and one EH101 or Lynx in a hangar aft (Skua ASMs and Stingray A/S torpedoes)
Electronic Equipment: One Type 967/968, one Type 1006 and two Type 911 (GWS 25 Mod 3 SAM fire-control system), two chaff launchers, Type 2031 towed array, Type 2050 bow sonar, one CACS 5 action information system and UAA-1 Abbbey Hill ESM
Machinery: Diesel-Electric cruise powerplant which is very quiet, has no mechanical connection to propellers and diesels are above watelrine to further reduce noise, electric drive also increases endurance and the generators drive the propellers and the electrical system. Two RR Spey SM1A for fast running.
Speed: 28 kts clean fast, 20 knots electric cruise
Range: 8,500nm at 15 kts
Complement: 235

^ that's probably as small and as lightly-armed as you're realistically going to get while still being able to have a useful warship.

intersting one espically for that time period with lessons learnt from the Falklands one of the things the RN concentrated on was the need for a decent calibre gun for NGFS. Hence the reason the Type 22/III got them and the Type 23.

If it's strictly an ASW platform it's not strictly necessary. I'd still consider a gun at least very useful for an ASuW-oriented or or AAW-oriented ship, but not for an ASW ship especially if it's to be as minimalist as possible.

BTW Harpoon was actually considered an ASW weapon originally (for use against surfaced SSBNs).

Sure.

Because it's a nuclear gas turbine

(even so many real vessels of this size are equipped with only one turbine)

1 LWNP (light weigh nuclear powerplant) and 1 gas turbine, to be exact. geh, I suppose I should stop thinking that people read the entire forum, as this subject has come up at least one or 2 times the last month....
