The ship is very small and the details of the masts can not be shown well. Also I have not found images of the Barceló with the sails, only with bare masts, but in the blueprint they are shown and in the documents it is indicated that they used them.

Small gunboat Alerta

After the insurrection in Cuba, Spain purchased eighteen small gunboats to Spanish and British shipyards. The Alerta (Alert) class (six units) was one of them. They were small metal units, with a displacement of 43 tons and armed with a 42 mm Nordenfelt cannon and a 37 mm Maxim machine gun. They were used for coastal surveillance and several units faced to US ships in 1898. The Alerta fought in Cárdenas against American cruisers and torpedo boats.

Small gunboat Ligera

The Ligera (Light) was a gunboat of the Estrella (Star) class, very similar to the Alerta. In 1898 was destined to the defense of Cárdenas (Cuba). On March 15 fought with US torpedo boat Foote, who was damaged. Was the first combat of the war. On June 8, the Ligera and Alerta gunboats, with the armed tugboat Antonio López (57 mm gun), fought with the US cruiser Wilmigton, the Machias and Hudson gunboats, and the Wislow torpedo boat. The Winslow was badly damaged (shortly after dying down) and the Americans had to retreat.

Torpedo boat Azor.



The Azor class torpedo boat (Azor and Halcón, two types of hawks) were commissioned to the Yarrow shipyards in Great Britain. Their design derived from the successful Adler built for the Austrian-Hungarian navy. These were relatively large and well-armed vessels with some oceanic capacity. However, they were not prepared for the stormy Atlantic.

When they were built, they were provided with masts and sails for their journey to Spain, which were removed on an indeterminate date. It seems that the armament was increased, which became three Nordenfelt guns of 42 mm (one on the port and two on the starboard side) and a rotary torpedo tube.

In 1898 the Azor was assigned to the division of Villaamil, but although was reinforced for the transfer, he suffered damage during a storm. After arriving in Cape Verde he had to return to the Canary Islands.

In 1905 it was renamed Torpedero número 2. In 1911 Azor sank near Cádiz after colliding with the torpedo boat Orión.

Very appealing little boat! (and I am "stealing" it!).

I have a privilege to post a small entry into this excellent thread thanks to kind permission from Yqueleden (given to me some time ago).

History of insurgencies of muslim population of southern Philippines, first against Spanish, then Americans, Japanese and finally the Republic of Philippines is 4 centuries long and rich in notable episodes, also from naval point of view.
During one of outbreaks of unrest on Mindanao in 1890s Spanish military had to concentrate their efforts on the area around Lake Lanao, which thanks being fed by four rivers and having shores convenient for amphibious landings, was simply begging to be used as a route of maneuver. Initially several improvised gunboats were used, but in 1894 designs for custom-made vessels, optimized for local conditions, were made by Manuel Rodríguez, chief engineer of Spanish naval forces in the Philippines. These vessels were 25 meters long and were characterized by a lightly armoured citadel with embrasures and gun ports for infantry assault detachment in the central part of relatively flat-bottomed hull. Two such vessels - General Blanco and Lanao were built in Hong Kong and delivered in sections to Mindanao in 1895. These were followed by two smaller and simpler ones - Almonte and Corcuera in 1896. In theory, armament of all four was to consist of single Nordenfelt cannon and 3 machine guns, but in reality their armament seemed to be just "whatever could be found in the arsenal at the moment".
In late 1890s Spanish combat group made up of these 4 gunboats and several smaller boats and launches (and supporting unit of infantry) effectively cleared shores of the lake from insurgents, but the outcome of Spanish-American War sealed their fate and in 1899 they were destroyed by their crews.



It should be noted that some websites show a pictures of a smaller and simpler gunboats described as "Lanao", but I think these actually show either Almonte or Corcuera and term Lanao was originally used attributively, as in "some gunboat from Lanao area", rather than as specific name of the vessel in question.
