The last of the ugly bunch: HIJMS Matsushima, the japanese flagship at the battle of the Yalu 1894, also built by FCM at La Seyne.

In 1883, the japanese government ordered three protected cruisers of about 3.500 tons each, two in Britain one in France. The British ones became Naniwa and Takachiho and were perfectly workable designs although their armament of 2 260mm and 6 152mm guns made them a bit top-heavy. The French yard Forges et Chantiers de la Gironde wanted their ship to be the best of the three in order to secure future contracts and armed it with 4 240mm and 6 152mm guns, making it more than just a bit top-heavy; the Japanese bought it without a second thought and called the ship HIJMS Unebi. Consequently, everyone was quite flabberghasted when Unebi capsized and sunk with all hands somewhere near Singapore on her delivery cruise in December 1886.
