As I was using this as the basis for a fictional sub, I decided to complete the historic ship as well.
Novice, I hope that you don't mind me posting this in your thread.

This is done from the best info I have been able to assemble on the Japanese Army's YU-01 class of transport submarine. If anyone has any comments, critiques, or further source information to contribute, please let me know!

Nice one Carthaginian. In fact I couldn't find much on the Yu-o1 of the army especially any images, so a big THX for this.

Good work so far, great to see some of these 'forgotten' ships drawn.

OK, I think that this is finished pretty much right.
The 37mm gun gave me a bit of trouble, so I went very simple on it. I will own up to using a picture of the similar YU-1001 for the 'below the waterline' bits- but only because I simply had zero sources for this class. If anyone finds a drawing of this one below the waterline, I'll correct any problems then. The YU-1001 itself will be next up on my list, probably over the weekend.
If anyone has any ideas on how to improve the shading, shadows or any other colorizing issues, let me know.

Very good job, especially considering lack of references.
Perhaps too late but here are a few photographs (including one of the underwater hull) that might be helpful for fine-tuning your drawing:
YU-01-1
YU-01-2
YU-01-3

And a little drawing:

WhyMe,

THANK YOU! I'll start correcting things at once, and probably have the corrected drawing done tonight when I get back from work. I used the photos of YU-03 from here as my source http://www.navsource.org/archives/08/08455.htm. They didn't have the underwater hull, but it looks like the one I had was close enough. Also, the line drawing seems to miss a few details on the deck that my pictures had; but it has a few details that the damaged sub in my pics doesn't show (like the placement of the loading cranes)... which makes sense as the sub in my pics was being used to sell war bonds, and the people who toured her could also buy parts from the sub!

Also, I have heard roomers that some of these subs were painted that strange greenish-brown color that the Japanese Navy tried out on some of their destroyers, and plan to do a version in that color as well.

This looks really interesting. I thought I had seen all the IJN subs
but this one is new to me. From its small size I'm guessing it's for
coastal defense.
