Not sure it's all that appropriate to call it an "old" radar in any case; I don't think the USN has yet commissioned a carrier without it...

and the KDX-2 class of south korea, for example, uses this radar. commisioned in 2003 and being an destroyer, I see no reason at all to consider SPS-49 'old' or 'outdated'. the latest version was developed in the mid-1990's.......

And the USN is not comparable, its the US Navy they always re-use old stuff. take the Iowa's for expample enough said.
