When launched these boats represented the pinnacle of Danish submarine design. The Delfinen class were the last class of military submarine to be designed and build in Denmark. The later Narhval class were build in Denmark but the design were bought in Germany.
Originally the plan had called for three units, but by the time they'd entered service the US had decided to pay for a fourth.
Technically part of the same class, the S329 Springeren had little in common with the other units. Everything from propulsion to combat systems via ballast systems had been reworked and upgraded.
