In 1951 Lloyd Triestino of Italy was operating a single passenger ship to Australia, the Toscana (ex-Saarbrücken), It was soon realised that more ships are needed, and so three new motor ships were ordered for the Australian service.
The first was the Australia
In 1958 all three ships were reconstructed, with the well-deck forward plated over, and a new passenger lounge built there.
In 1963, with the growing competition from the jet airliner, all three ships were withdrawn from Lloyd Triestino services and transferred to Italia's serviced to South America, the Australia becoming Denozetti.
In 1976 the ship was finally scrapped.
