with many great design already being submitted,so i search some my old kitbash for-fun project and refurbished it to meet challenge standard,OK then here is my entry
Mackensen Class of Alternate Kriegsmarine
Mackensen class was born from outright confusion during Plan Z,with OKM ambition to build H-class battleships project that will form central of the overall Plan Z,but with OKM specification always changing everytime that even make the H-class bigger and more expensive to produce that even building all of it would not completed until after 1946,which was unacceptable for German OKM.Then came the surprised for OKM.
In July 1939,Royal Navy laid two of its new Lion-class battleships which were armed with 16 inch gun which far outperformed the 16in gun mounted on Bismarck and 15in gun of Scharnhorst class.OKM decided rather than waited for H-super battleships that takes too many years to build,OKM decided to built smaller version of H-class which would use mixed diesel-turbine powerplant, weight no more than 63.000 t and most importantly have enough speed to outrun the Lions.and importantly cheaper and more realistic to built than 20inch H-class
Mackensen was designed quickly around discarded H-37 battleships but have wider beam and longer by 10m,She is 271m long and have 38m beam,10,7 m deep draft and normal displacement of 61.000 t and already designed with atlantic bow from start.Mackensen carried quite a punch for its main battery, the main battery is 8x 420mm in 3 SKC/40 mount which was further evolution of 406mm gun (Although the main reason of adopting 420mm over ordinary 406mm is Hitler intervention, which want bigger gun for propaganda purposes),Secondary armament include 18 dual purpose 127mm SK L/45 in 9 C/37 mount,20x 37mm Flak 38 and 20x Flakvierling 38 and dozen of MG mounts (later replaced by 20mm MG 151/20).
Mackensen armour is consisted of 170m long Wotan Hart Armoured Belt of 420mm of thickness over magazine and ship machinery but tapered to 400mm on other areas and inclined 12 degrees inwards.Conning tower have 420mm of armour,180mm of deck armour and 110mm thick torpedo bulkhead with many watertight bulkhead to prevent flooding.
Machinery consisted of two Brown Boveri turbines and 2 MAN diesel engine which capable to bring Mackensen to 34 knots and range of 7200 nm.
Mackensen was laid down in Germaniawerft in December 1939 and by means of priority was completed in May 1942,and soon going crew training in Baltic Sea for another 4 months.
