Smurf those drawings are great to show the design process and how they stood against the opposition.

Its always interesting to me how battlecruisers tend to be longer than battleships, I always think the battleships would be the larger, but it is usually the battlecruisers instead.

longer hull more space for bigger machinery and also a mush sleeker hull, gives a higher speed. and Battle-cruiser was a class of ships that was intended to be fast. A battleship was different, they need just enough speed to get from A to B and do there missions, but be compact and powerful. Iowa class and Yamato class is something else tough... they are what you call fast battleship...

Hm interesting, makes sense, weren't several other classes outside the iowas and yamatos considered fast battleships as well?

Indeed. All battleships built from 1921 ish is considered fast battleships, with the exception of the American Colorado class. The QE class is THE first fast battleship.

Hi. Also the converted WWI italian dreadnoughts were fast battleships (27.5 kts).

Thanks Mike, that is a pretty comprehensive list of designs. The most unfortunate thing is that I can not see the two Lillicrap designs I have just done drawings of, which tends to support the fact that they were never meant to be taken seriously. Oh well they have been fun to produce drawings of anyway.
