And hello again!

As threatened a few weeks ago, here the competing italian bomber designs that were proposed as alternatives to the P.108B: Caproni Ca.204, CRDA Z.1014 and Fiat G.30B.


The Ca.204 was the smallest and lightest proposal and had the smallest payload (only 2.000 kg at maximum range); she however was the fastest (515 kph) and longest-ranged (4.350 km). She was declared the second-best competitor, but (like the medium CRDA Z.1018) needed the 1.700 hp Alfa Romeo 135 engine which needed 100-octane fuel the Italians did not have and never functioned reliably anyway (best attainable power on 87-octane fuel was 1.400 hp).


The Z.1014 had far and away the best performance of all proposed heavy bombers: Almost as fast as the Ca.204, only marginally less range, twice the payload and better defensive armament (8 rather than 5 12.7mm MG). She was fully 100 kph faster than the P.108, but - which proved her demise - twice as expensive per copy; she also was designed around the ill-fated Alfa 135.


The G.30b was little more than an upscale of the BR.20; she was considered the worst of the quartet. Her Fiat A.82 engines were weaker than the Alfa 135, but no more reliable; the projected speed of 480 kph seems quite unrealistic.

That Z.1014 is really impressive! With that Italy could strike the entire Mediterranean area or support the eastern front.
