By 1939 the War Departement decided to reacquire twelve vessels to serve with US Army. All were to be named after distinguished US Army Officers. Early wartime losses reduced the class to eight vessels, which were commissioned as Harris-class. This is USAT Hunter Liggett. She sported “Neutrality” markings in form of a large scale flag painted on her sides.

Eventually, the ships were transferred to the Navy. They kept their Army names and were classed as Troop Transport (AP). This is USS Zeilin AP-9 in early 1942. She’s painted in Measure 3, overall light gray.

I like this transport vessel but I'm wondering what the blury thing at the propeller shaft is? BTW on the latest Harris drawing you miss something (the vertical lines) in the rails on the upper deck.

Thanks for spotting that... Well, I'm not quite sure what to tell you here. It was there on the reference drawing, I used for the hull. I've wondered what they were too but figured they’d be some sort of water inlet/outlet. Obviously, I've never went back to check the detail on the original sized drawing. Otherwise, I'd have noticed that it was actually the draftsman’s signature...

The majority of the Harris class underwent a refit to mount a large complement of LCVPs as well as a number of LCMs. They also received some means of defending themselves. Their usual outfit consisted of four 3”/50 guns, two Bofors twins and an assorted number of Oerlikons.

By February 1943 the ships were reclassed as Attack Transport. This is USS Leonard Wood (APA-12) around 1944, painted in Measure 32/4T.
