Exactly. Like all German warships, GZ had to pass the Kiel Canal. However, with her huge hull she posed a large area of attack for side winds and her maximum speed in the canal (9kn) wasn't enough to compensate. These Voith-Schneider propellors were there to keep her steady. They were also powerful enough to accelrate the whole carrier alone to a whopping 4kn, given there was no current, wind or any form of rough sea... (The propellors were also completely retractable).

I don't think there was ever a full carrier conversion planned for Roon, as far as I know, so there are no plans for me (at the moment). Currently, I'm trying to get the Hipper-class done.
Wow, those are pretty handy.

And about the full Roon conversion, perhaps that can be left for the AU thread. ;)

The Kriegsmarine would have been a force to be reckoned with if it had a couple flattops in it's arsenal.

Maybe, but the fact that the German military at the time was mostly land-based (Luftwaffe included), I find myself doubting the practicality of an aircraft carrier in their arsenal, unlike Japan or Great Britain, whom would find aircraft carriers more viable considering that they're more island-based than continental.

But then I might be overthinking this, so what do I know?

A carrier in the Atlantic Sea lanes could spot a convoy from very far off and then dispatch attack planes to lay waste to it. It could also provide air suport for attacking wolfpacks by posibly picking off the convoys escourts.

Sadly, the Germans didn't have enough ocean-going escort ships to protect carriers. Had Graf Zeppelin and Peter Strasser been completed, they would've been prime targets and more than likely easy pickings. And with them being the only two carriers available to the Germans, they would've been horded like gold. Hitler was not amused to learn of Bismarck's fate...I'm sure he'd have quite a bit more to say had one of the carriers met a submarine and lost.

Not to mention the range of most German escort ships were... deplorable.

Ahh, so Germany having an aircraft carrier at that time would've been impractical?
