HMS Severn in 1915. Severn’s and Mersey's gun barrels wore out quickly, being fired extensively in operations along the Belgian coast. Lacking spares for the Vickers guns; the turrets were replaced by a single 6"Mk.VII mounting. A gun of the same design replaced the two howitzers aft.
It was in this guise that Severn and Mersey were towed to German East Africa with orders to destroy the cruiser SMS Königsberg, entrenched in the Rufiji Delta.
