Just one question, what kind of powerplant did you have in mind for these vessels? with their twin shafts also they would likely have also been somewhat more costly to produce machinery wise than a simple single screw adaptation of a trawler or such design which by necessity would be basic and spartan in design. Like it or not these ships were built to be expendable so reducing your costs is the main goal along with allowing them to be built as quickly as possible.
Note that many WW2 destroyers was build with twin shaft, and some with either direct drive or simple reduction gears.


Caledonia, have always believed in that a good designed destroyer and so on can defeat any destroyer that was build to be cheep and fast to build.

Perhaps I should have stated further then that I was referring to destroyer escorts as opposed to true destroyers. I do not know the exact role yours are designed for but an escort only needs to be fast enough to maintain position with her escorts and preferably outrun a surfaced submarine.

If it is a true fleet destroyer, then you want speed so twin shafts make perfect sense. Perhaps its just my confusion here as to the role of these vessels that is causing the concern.

Yes it can be confusing, but if I say that you can draw similarty betweem US Navy and caledonia, and some British and Norwegian ideas... then perhaps you understand why she have two shaft.

Even the Norwegian Sleipner class Destroyers, (note they are very small destroyer compared to other destroyers) they had two shaft. and also the Draug class!:

Ah yes, so these are more like supplemental fleet destroyers instead of convoy escorts? If I remember right all the USN DEs had twin shafts as well but they were designed to fill more roles than just an escort and speed was required.

Not an issue though I'd say.

I don't know why but there's something "off" here. Could you not ship more than eight main rifles on something this large?

What if I say it's an long range speed boats that does happens to carry eight 175 mm guns, or do you prefer a couple knots slower and 200 mm guns!

i'd give her twelve 7-inchers (4 triples) and call it a day; but well, i'm the one who usually designs heavy cruisers armed with 15x 8-inch guns and uber-big battleships, so you might wisely choose to stick with your draft :lol:
