I have been really busy with work, but I have managed to finish the Lisenian Navy's next class of cruisers. There's a lot more stuff waiting on the virtual dry dock. I'm also working on B-sides for all the ships I've drawn so far, so I will be going back and adding them to the drawings as I finish them up.

In 1908, the first of the scout cruisers ordered from American yards entered service. The Coronado class, built to Lisenian specifications, were meant to replace the older Estoque class, relegating them to coastal patrol, gunnery training, and 2nd rate duties. The new scout cruisers delighted the naval staff. They were fitted with modern American equipment, including the 6-inch gun, range finding equipment, wireless set, and were much larger and comfortable than their predecessors. The last two ships were notable for being the first ships in Lisenia to be fitted with the revolutionary new steam turbines for propulsion.

Armed with twin 6-inch guns and a six 4-inch quick firing guns, they equaled the Estoques in firepower but were much better armored and featured increased survivability with more water-proof compartmentalization. Their high-quality machinery made them faster, longer-ranged and more reliable. There were some problems however: the submerged torpedo tubes were never fitted due to weight, and the low bridge and wet bow made them uncomfortable in heavy weather.

Despite these drawbacks, the Coronados were an important addition for the Lisenian Navy, expanding the reach and capability of its scouting force and introducing it to important new technology like steam turbines. The American-built ships would also be studied intensely as the navy began to seriously prepare to design and construct its own vessels.

Looks "real" to me, which is what every Alt Uni drawing should strive towards. If you'd told me some actual nation had once build these, I would have believed it.

I've been missing the 'bucket, so here's the next update. I hope to have some B-sides coming up soon.

As part of the general modernization process, the Navy had received funds to purchase a two-ship class to replace the De Leon class armored cruisers. Just as before, the Navy made serious efforts to secure a pair of American-built dreadnoughts, even sending officers to visit the Fore River yard in Massachusetts and discuss possible options, but once again the battleships were axed due to cost. The naval facilities on the islands could not safely operate a large dreadnought, and in any case, the manpower required to operate two BB's was simply too great. It was also at this point that the navy finally had to accept the harsh truth that naval parity with the neighboring Japanese was completely out of the question. This was made abundantly clear with the construction of not one, but three formidable Kongo battlecruisers in the following years.

The naval brass instead opted to again turn to an Italian yard for a more affordable option. The final design chosen was a modest yet modern armored cruiser built in Genoa, with primary and secondary armament all mounted in turrets and decent armor. The resulting Hércules class was modeled closely on contemporary Italian cruisers. It was armed with four 10-inch guns in a pair of twin turrets and eight 7.5-inch guns in four twin turrets, and a good number of 75-mm and 47-mm guns to ward off torpedo boats. Two 18-inch torpedo tubes were also fitted. Armor was of good quality, and great care was taken in the design of water-tight compartments to improve survivability.

Hércules and sister ship Pegaso also introduced the new naval scheme of overall grey which replaced the old gaudy scheme of days past. The new ships were larger and much more powerful than the older cruisers they replaced, and as such, improvements had to be made to the naval bases that accommodated them. Despite being larger, they were somewhat cramped and they never managed to capture the public's imagination to the same extent that their predecessors did. Nonetheless, they represented the sharp end of the navy from their introduction in 1911 and were destined to have long lives defending the country's waters and interests.
