HMS M.18 was a near sister to M.17. She had the same armament, but was powered by two Bolinder 4-Cylinder Semi-Diesel engines, rated at 480 bhp. This necessitated change to the engine room layout, which becomes very apparent around her funnel. M.18 was the only ship with this configuration.
HMS M.19 and later M15-class monitors were designed to mounted the BL 9.2” Mk.VI, taken off the retiring Edgar-class cruisers. Their main armament allowed for a different upper deck structure, with the bridge further aft. She was fitted with the same Bolinder plant previously employed in M.18.

That which does not kill me has made a grave tactical error
I've wondered about that too. In short it's an engine that, as oposed to a "real" diesel engine, does not solly rely on the compression cycle to ignite the fuel. The type is also known as a Hot Bulb Engine.
