Thanks to everyone!
By the turn of the century, the technical developement had overtaken
D1 and
D2 and left the torpedo boat fleet, but were not taken out of comission - Both were rebuilt as station yachts.
D1, now renamed
Carmen, served in Kiel as escort ship, tour ship for 'bathing guests', high ranking visiors or parade ship for the Kiel Week or for foreign guests. Of course the torpedo-boat black had been replaced by the representative white and gold, always scrubbed clean and shiny. The origin of the spanish-sounding name is a mystery, but some say it was due to the old engine rattling like castanets.
The new name of
D2 was unusual, at least for a German ship:
Alice Roosevelt. As emerging global players the United States and the German Empire had collided severeal times, noticable was the Manila-conflict of 1898. As an act of diplomatic good will, the German Kaiser had ordered the new Imperial racing yacht (the thrid
Meteor) at Shooter's Island, New York City. For the christening act in 1902, the Kaiser's brother, Prince Heinrich von Preussen came over to the United States, patroness of the new yacht was the daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt, Alice Rossevelt. This act was also the foundation of the German-American sailing friendship.
When Alice Roosevelt was asked by Heinrich von Preussen if she had a wish about a favour in return, she said (in joke) that one of those noble military titles would be nice. This, of course, was impossible, so in return one of the rebuilt station yachts was named after her.
D2 was rebuilt a similar way like
D1, but with a slightly smaller deck house and different bridge structure. Also, she kept her 50mm cannons, but those were now fired for salutes only, as she served in the same function in Wilhelmshaven as her sistership.
By 1909,
Alice Roosevelt had recieved a new boiler, which caused the funnel to be moved back. Also, the deck house was now identical to the one on Carmen.
