So not a link but this seemed like a good place to post this. A couple weeks ago I found a nice but sad view of the Mobile Chernobyl (AKA USS Enterprise) to eat my lunch to. All her emplacements are pretty much cone along with her mast most obviously. Its hard to see but there are hundreds of CONEX boxes on her deck that they are filling with ripped out gear and material to crane off.

do you get near that site often? this might be one of the only possibilities to see anything of the construction around an nuclear ship powerplant, when they get below her hangar deck level while scrapping her.

She's going to be deactivated and defueled, then towed around Cape Horn to Bremerton to have her reactor removed and have the hull scrapped.

Edit: The Deactivation is taking place at Norfolk, then they will haul her across the river (Newport News) to defuel her, then they will tow her to the other side of the country to scrap her.

I drive the water front every day, but like TimothyC mentioned the real heavy scrapping work won't be done at the base but at dedicated facility with all the security that would keep us from seeing exactly what you mentioned.

Its a storied ship though and I thought you guys might like to see her in the process of retirement. She only has about half her normal crew assigned right now, mostly the nuclear types keeping her plant in in line during the decommissioning process. Most of the decommissioning work is being done by contractors.

Yes, LCS has problems but to say that the 'ship' 'costs' $37 Billion is wrong. That's the program costs, and to say that it can be taken out by a single cruise missile is both true (if the CIWS mount and the 57mm gun are down), and a fact of most ships.
