As for the port side being lighter than the starboard side, I believe it is just a question of lighting, exposure and other photographic related issues. Remember the pictures, if were taken in color in 1942, there was a war on, and chemicals for development of pictures wee in short supply.
I don't know if it is the right answer, but seems logical to me.
Oh! I'm sorry I've forgot telling that the colour schemes was from a coloured drawing with colour codes on. As I wrote; it isn't a mistake
