Half way into episode one of Babylon 5 second series box set on Friday night our TV screen began flashing into a negative image, and I couldn't persuade it to desist. Does this mean our set has reached its predetermined fault when we need to replace it? Or is there anything we can do to fix it? Its definately the set because I isolated it from the dvd player

Second question Is it possible to simply use a monitor, by attaching it to the dvd player? We don't watch tv, so in theory this should be simple, or not

Why don't you try a different DVD to see if the same thing happens?

You can always play it from your computer, if you have windows media player or other such dvd progs.

• How old is the set?
• Is it a classic tube tv or is it a flat panel? I really should reverse these first two questions).
• Using a monitor - it depends. Most monitors these days will have VGA (Classic computer video) and at least one other connector. Some (like my 19" secondary screen) don't have anything other than VGA, but it's a relic of a bygone era.
• The other connectors you are going to see are DVI, DisplayPort, & HDMI.
• If you've got HDMI output on the DVD Player (which you might if it's less than 4 years old), and HDMI input on the monitor, then yes you can use a monitor.

I use a DVI to HDMI Cable for my monitor!

I actually have the Babylon 5 box set too, except that despite being up to this point unopened and unused it looks like two of the disks for Season 4 are scratched beyond use. Any advice?

You could get the disks resurfaced at certain computer shops.

Yes, it was (apparently) a 'studio' decision, meaning, the men in suits. So yes, by the end of Season One we had identified with the O'Hare character, then we get the newbie, who was parachuted in. Still, he did manage to develop in the role, another four seasons to do it in.
