The other likely look of Yamato per 1945 pre operation Ten Go with more open 25mm mounts and only a few remaining 25mm singles.
And a whole crapload of those 25mm triple turrets.

One question I have is why they left about four 5-inch gun turrets uncovered, though considering the lack of resources it's not really an operational priority.

all 6 upper row 127mm mounts were left open due to the lack of shields as you just guesses, had she lived longer, she may have received the covers. If you look closely at the shields for the new central 25mm triples you will notice that the shape is slightly different. The shields were cheaper and less streamlined versions, and example of the desperation that the IJN was in by the end of the war.

Also, note that the shields were primarily to protect the gun crews from the blast of the 18.1 inch guns rather than oncoming enemy fire. If anything, they made the guns more sluggish and reduced crew visibility.

I guess the guys who were stationed at the unprotected mounts on the main deck drew the short straws.

The "official" HIJMS YAMATO per early March 1945, as she looked sitting in Kure harbor.

I will also post an honorary picture that strictly follows the 1/10th model, and then TEN ICHI GO!

Just love it... Say what you will about the Yamato, but it was like this/during Ten Go that she was at her peak appearance-wise.

This is very nice work but I don't (and have never really) viewed this sort of attempt as true "Shipbucket". There are too many areas where it strays from the style for me to really endorse it as Shipbucket work. I'd call it 2px:1ft scale and leave it at that.

Not disparaging the quality of the drawing, which is really very nice, but it's too far off the style guidelines to really be acceptable.
